Physical Education Class Curriculum


  KINDERGARTEN

Kindergarten students will demonstrate the use of motor skills such as running, jumping, skipping, and galloping.  The students will demonstrate the ability to listen to and follow basic instructions.  They will learn how and why we stretch before physical activity.  Students will gain a basic understanding of sports and their rules and show the ability to work as a team as well as an individual in athletic situations.  The students will be able to demonstrate fair play and sportsmanship.

  FIRST GRADE

First grade students will use a variety of activities in order to enjoy exercise. They will demonstrate teamwork as well as individual skill. The students will exhibit the ability to throw and kick objects in a general intended direction. Students will demonstrate a basic understanding of rules of games and show fair play and sportsmanship. They will demonstrate proper and safe use of all equipment.

 
         
  SECOND GRADE

Second grade students will demonstrate a better understanding of proper techniques used in sports and an understanding of rules of games.  They will use their abilities to help others who may not be as talented and show good sportsmanship and fair play throughout all sports.  The students will begin to exhibit the ability to make corrections on improper techniques in sports and display an understanding of where skills come from and use them well.

  THIRD GRADE

Third grade students will demonstrate a better understanding of proper techniques used in sports. They will exhibit an understanding of rules of games and engage in helping their classmates to learn these skills as well. The students will demonstrate a mastery of motor skills such as running, jumping, and skipping. They will display the correct and safe use of more advanced equipment. Students will always show good sportsmanship and fair play throughout all activities.

 
         
  FOURTH GRADE

Fourth grade students will demonstrate a full understanding of the rules for all sports played. They will show the ability to make different body parts work together, whether stationary or as part of a whole movement. The students will demonstrate leadership skills by helping others and exhibit the ability to work as a team member. Students will show the ability to listen to and follow all instructions given to them. They will continue to show good sportsmanship and fair play throughout every sport played.

  FIFTH GRADE

Fifth grade students will learn to work on ways to strengthen and tone the body. They will perform simple levels of the Presidential fitness test.The students will exhibit the ability to execute skills needed in mainstream games and will demonstrate full control over their body during simple and more complex motor skills. Students will exhibit the ability to officiate their own games as a result of understanding the rules and recognizing that winning is not everything. The students will continue to demonstrate good sportsmanship and fair play.

 
         
  SIXTH GRADE

Sixth grade students will begin to take tests about mainstream sports and their rules. They will be able to organize, play, and officiate games on their own. The students will show responsibility in being prepared for class and using their time well. They will show a decreased need for the teacher to explain basic strategies and rules and continue to show good sportsmanship and fair play.

  SEVENTH GRADE

Seventh grade students will continue to take tests over the rules and terminology of sports. They will show mastery of hand-eye coordination and motor skills. The students will also begin to display a developed ability level in strength, endurance, agility, and flexibility. They will continue to demonstrate responsibility to help make physical education safe, efficient, and fun. The students will attempt to create simple games and teach them to the class. They will continue to progress in leadership abilities and to show good sportsmanship and fair play.


 
 
         
  EIGHTH GRADE

Eighth grade students will continue to demonstrate leadership in all phases of sports, such as organizing, helping others, and enforcing fair play. The students will come prepared for class and make sure others around them are also prepared. They will continue to take tests over sports rules and terminology. Students will demonstrate self-control even when others around them do not. They will be able to create simple games and teach them to the class. The students will continue to show good sportsmanship and fair play.
