Music Class Curriculum


  KINDERGARTEN
Students will sing simple songs, some in echo form, and listen to music and identify simple instruments.  The students will keep a steady beat on their bodies and be able to transfer that beat to an instrument.  Students will recognize loud/soft, fast/slow differences and perform them.  They will improvise movements that go with words of a song.  Students will recognize high/low sounds in music and be able to use their singing, speaking, whispering, and shouting voices.  The students will find numbers in the church hymnal and sing simple refrains.
  FIRST GRADE
First grade students will sing and play ti, ti, ta patterns and will experience do, mi, so and perform these pitches.  The students will recognize fast/slow and move to sections of music.  Students will listen and identify instruments and sing in different languages.  The students will add some verses to their church song repertoire.
 
         
  SECOND GRADE
Second grade students will be able to name simple instruments when listening to music.  They will recognize different sections of music and make up appropriate movements.  The students will sing eighth, quarter, and half notes and perform them on instruments.  Students will be familiar with songs from different countries.  They will sing longer echo songs and sing do, mi, so, and la.  Students will recognize notes that go up, down, or stay the same.  The students will be familiar with Catholic liturgical repertoire and how it relates to Sunday worship.
 
  THIRD GRADE
Third grade students will sing and play instruments in different dynamic and tempo levels.  They will be able to sing and play eighth, quarter, half, and sixteenth notes and be able to play and sing notes moving up, down, or staying the same.  The students will identify different sections of a song and move appropriately and identify multiple instruments after listening to a song.  Students will sing in a round and sing songs in other languages.  They will recognize patterns in music.  The students will expand their liturgical repertoire and be able to relate songs to the time of the church year.
 
         
  FOURTH GRADE
Fourth grade students will be comfortable singing and playing most kinds of notes and rests.  They will recognize strong and weak beats and relate to double, triple and quadruple meter.  The students will be introduced to tonal centers.  Students will experiment with different timbres using different instruments and voice groupings.  They will sing simple harmonies and the rhythmic concept of syncopation will be introduced to the students.  Students will recognize different sections of music and make up appropriate actions.  The students will sing in different languages.  The students will expand their liturgical repertoire and relate songs to the church year and to different mass parts.
  FIFTH GRADE
Fifth grade students will be aware of dynamic and tempo changes in music and the reasons behind these changes.  They will sing more difficult harmonies and perform syncopation and pentatonic scale.  The students will sing music from other countries and study theatrical music.  They will be made aware of the voice mechanics associated with singing and will sing and make up ostinatos.  The students will make up more complicated dance patterns and perform them.  They will study partner songs.  Students will be comfortable with different roles in liturgical celebrations such as reading, singing, and gift procession.
 
         
  SIXTH GRADE
Sixth grade students will read more difficult rhythms, intervals, and harmonies.  They will recognize different sections of music and be able to relate the differences in instruments and/or movement.  The students will learn the elements of scale structure and chord building.  They will sing music from other countries.  The students will study and perform ostinatos and more complicated textures.  They will become comfortable with a variety of repertoire from Rock and Jazz to Classical and Broadway.  The students will be comfortable with most aspects of Catholic liturgy and with taking on leadership roles.   
  SEVENTH GRADE
Seventh grade students will sing and play instruments in a variety of tempos, dynamics, and textures.  They will recognize step, leap, repeat, and specific intervals.  The students will experiment with a variety of tone colors and movements to accompany songs.  They will understand the concepts of syncopation, ostinato, beat groupings, and be able to perform them.  When listening to music, students will be able to identify major instrument families and several instruments in each family.  The students will build scales and chords and understand the difference in minor scales.  They will study the history of Blues, Jazz, and early Rock.  The students will understand Catholic liturgical music and the relationship between week days, Sunday, holy days, and seasons of the church year.

 
 
         
  EIGHTH GRADE
Eighth grade students will sing two-part harmonies and understand the elements of music and how they relate to different genres.  They will perform in simple, compound, and mixed meter.  The students will read complicated rhythms accurately, including syncopated rhythm.  They will build major scales and chords from the scales.  The students will know the basic instrument families and at least four instruments in each family.  Students will know basic textures in music and be able to perform comfortably in any of them.  They will know a basic music history chart related to the progression of Classical music.  Students will write a basic song.  The students will understand Catholic liturgical music and be able to explain reasons for placement of music related to the church season and type of celebration.
