Library Science Class Curriculum


  KINDERGARTEN
Students in kindergarten will be exposed to a variety of literature including but not limited to the classics, fairy tales and folk tales, award winning books and contemporary fiction through picture books.  Students will listen to picture books with illustrations presented using the projector and the SMART Board. They will be able to identify literary terms, author, and illustrator, and begin to identify fact and fiction books. Students will learn responsibility for returning books weekly. They will learn to select books for independent reading, and develop listening skills.
 
  FIRST GRADE
Students in first grade will be exposed to various types of literature. They will practice listening skills, reading skills, and be exposed to different types of reference books. Students will be introduced to series books to generate interest and independent reading. Students will practice listening comprehension and be exposed to character, setting, and plot development. They will be responsible for the timely return of books, and learn to select books at grade level.
 
         
  SECOND GRADE
Students in second grade will practice research skills using dictionaries, maps, and almanacs. They will be exposed to various types of fiction and comprehend fact and fiction. The second grade students will be able to identify main characters, simple story lines, and setting by listening to books read aloud and independent reading. Second grade students will begin to identify genres of literature. Students will be responsible for the weekly return of library books.
  THIRD GRADE
Students in third grade will be exposed
to different literary genres. They will begin doing book reports and other assignments outside of the classroom. They will be responsible for the weekly return of library books.
They will be able to discern fact and fiction. Students will identity parts of a story, character, plots, and setting. Students will practice research skills using the dictionary, atlas, Internet, and almanac.  Students will learn to read and identify a variety of maps.
 
         
  FOURTH GRADE
Students in fourth grade will exhibit comprehension of the different genres of fiction. They will begin to identify and explain character development, plot, setting, and begin to understand theme.  They will practice research skills using a variety of sources. Students will learn to use maps, pinpoint latitude and longitude, identity major geographic locations, and understand map keys.  Students will take notes, organize data, and discern information as fact, fiction, and opinion.
  FIFTH GRADE
Students in fifth grade will work to improve reading fluency and comprehension through monthly book reports, will be exposed to different literary genres.   They will learn to read for content, take notes, and organize notes in outline formats.  Students will continue to learn research skills, using a variety of resources. They will practice organizational skills,  complete research projects, book reports, and return books to the library when due.
 
         
  SIXTH GRADE
Students in sixth grade will continue to practice organizational skills. Students will be exposed to more independent research projects using a variety of information resources.  
Students will exhibit comprehension in reading and understanding different types of maps, graphs, and charts. They will analyze and display information collected during research and discern fact, fiction, and opinion. Students will be able to identity and compare and contrast different literary genres.  
  SEVENTH AND EIGHTH GRADES
Students in seventh and eighth grades will be encouraged to explore books with more complex themes and vocabulary. They will display knowledge of literary genres.
Students will learn to evaluate Internet websites and authoritative sources, collect, organize, and present data using a variety of presentation formats.  Students will practice research protocol using reliable sources and databases. Students will be exposed to high school reading lists and work to read at higher levels in preparation for high school.
