Second Grade Curriculum


  ENGLISH
The students will identify parts of speech to write complete sentences:  nouns, pronouns, verbs, and adjectives.  The students will be able to write five sentence paragraphs in letter writing, creative writing, journals, and research papers.  The students will be able to identify and write four kinds of sentences:  declarative, interrogative, exclamatory, and imperative.  The students will use correct capitalization and punctuation in writing.  The will use the Six Trait Writing program.
 
  SPELLING and HANDWRITING
Students will spell assigned words on tests and daily work.  They will exhibit handwriting skills in practice and daily work.  The second grade students will also be introduced to cursive handwriting.
 
         
  RELIGION
The sacraments of Reconciliation and the Holy Eucharist are the highlights of second grade.  The students will express knowledge of these sacraments.  In the sacrament of Reconciliation, the students will relate Reconciliation as a celebration of God’s healing, forgiveness, and peace for all people.  In turn, the children will also realize forgiveness for others.  In the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist, the children will profess belief in the Body and Blood of Christ given in the Eucharist which brings us closer to God and leads us to be more like Jesus in our daily actions.  The students will also participate and be able to explain the basic parts of the Mass beginning with the Introduction, Liturgy of the Word and Liturgy of the Eucharist, as well as recognize the church seasons.  The second grade students will also show respect and honor for the Blessed Virgin Mary as the Mother of Jesus and recognize other important people throughout the church’s history.
  MATH
The second grade students will identify and solve problems using basic units of measurement, two and three-dimensional shapes, are, and perimeter, and beginning fractions.  They will also describe number patterns and interpret graphs and data.  Students will add and subtract through the hundreds with regrouping and without regrouping, as well as describe the inverse relationships of addition and subtraction.  Second grade students will demonstrate the rule for rounding two or three digit numbers and they will use mental math, estimation, and problem solving strategies while solving problems. 
 
         
  SCIENCE        
The second grade students will identify major body parts and organs.  They will explain how each of the five senses is interrelated, how bones and muscles work together, and how body parts and organs are all interrelated.  The students will also demonstrate an understanding of the layers of the rain forest, animals and plants of the rain forest, uses and products of the rain forest, and the water cycle.  The children will examine the effects of ecology on our earth.  They will be involved in recycling, reusing, and replenishing throughout the school year.  The second grade students will also explain and observe the life cycle of a butterfly.  They will name the parts of a butterfly as well as compare and contrast butterflies and moths. 
  SOCIAL STUDIES                
The students will recognize the importance of self and family.  The students will appreciate and understand lifestyles of past generations.  The students will understand and apply mapping skills.  The students will appreciate and understand American holidays.  The students will develop an understanding of Christmas customs and traditions from around the world.
 
  READING
The students will use phonetic and structural analysis strategies to decode words.  The students will use phonics and decoding to analyze consonant clusters, initial and final consonants, short vowels, long vowels, vowel teams, compound words, base words and endings, prefixes and suffixes.  The students will read and comprehend at their ability level using balanced literacy, leveled readers, literature sets, and the reading series.  The students will apply prediction skills, prior knowledge, inference skills, sequencing skills, and be able to make connections to comprehend works of fiction and non-fiction.  The students will appreciate other cultures through reading selections.  The students will interpret written and oral directions and demonstrate the ability to use critical thinking and listening skills in both oral and written language.
