| ENGLISH The students will continue to learn skills for writing a paragraph using the Six-Trait Writing model. They will use the following conventions: idea, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions. Students will write in a variety of styles including expository, persuasive, compare/contrast, how-to, letters, and narratives. They will practice the use of proper English grammar. |
SPELLING and VOCABULARY Fourth grade vocabulary will increase students’ vocabulary and improve vocabulary skills. Students will spell assigned words and exhibit spelling skills in written work/expression. |

| RELIGION Teaching the four pillars of the Catechism of the Catholic Church is the foundation of fourth grade religion. They are: Creed, Sacraments, Morality, and Prayer. The students will identify the Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes as guides for Christian living. The students will recognize the Eucharist as the center of our faith life through preparation for, and participation in, this celebration. |
MATH Addition and subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers, and fractions are the goals of fourth grade math. The skills include estimation, double-digit multiplication and division, long division, and fractions (lowest terms, mixed numbers, improper fractions, and equivalents). Addition skill covered will include place value and number theory of whole numbers, problem solving, using multiple steps, graphs, and critical thinking. The students will measure using standard and metric units of weight, length, degrees, and elapsed time. |

| SCIENCE The students will compare/contrast plant and animal cells. They will identify the basic needs of animals and classify organisms. The students will compare/contrast the body organ systems. The students will recognize physical properties of matter, states of matter, and the effects of physical and chemical change in matter. The students will explain evidence of the earth’s history through rocks. They will investigate static and current electricity. The students will discuss natural resources, conservation efforts and consequences of producing and disposing of trash. The students will use science investigative skills. |
SOCIAL STUDIES Fourth grade social studies will focus on the regions of the United States. Students will compare and contrast the geography, history, and economy of the five regions. They will use research skills to investigate important aspects, history, people, and facts about the state of Missouri and the United States. They will appreciate cultural diversity in Missouri, the United States, and the world. They will respond to current events. They will use map and graph skills. |

| READING A love of reading and increasing comprehension skills is emphasized in fourth grade reading. Through different genres of literature the students will demonstrate the skills of distinguishing fact and opinion, using context clues, summarizing the story, making generalizations, predicting outcomes, making inferences, and correctly sequencing events. Students will recognize the elements of a story: plot, character, setting, voice, theme, and point of view. |
