| LANGUAGE ARTS The students will develop skills of drawing conclusions and recognizing main idea, topic sentences, and supporting details. Students will identify the correct sequence of events in stories. Students will use inferential and critical reading skills, identify and correctly punctuate different types of sentences and identify parts of speech. The students will identify simple and complete subjects and predicates, and use proofreading skills to edit and revise written work. The students will know the definitions, synonyms, and antonyms of the weekly grade level vocabulary/spelling words. Students will correctly spell words with added prefixes and suffixes and proofread for spelling errors. |
SPELLING and VOCABULARY The students will be responsible for learning the spelling, definition, part of speech, synonyms, and antonyms, for the weekly grade appropriate words in their vocabulary book. In addition, they will focus on incorporating those words into their writing projects. |

| RELIGION The students will know the Sacraments of Initiation and the Sacraments of Healing and Commitment. Students will identify and use the different Sacramentals to remind them of the presence of Christ in their lives. Students will use the Bible to read about the events of Jesus’ life. The students will have a better appreciation and understanding of the Mass and the liturgical seasons of the Church. Students will become more aware of the needs of others and respond to those needs through prayer and service projects. |
MATH The students will recognize place value of whole numbers and decimals, and compute accurately addition, subtraction, and multiplication of fractions and mixed numbers (to include lowest term, common factors, and equivalent fractions). Students will compute accurately addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of decimals. The students will use estimation techniques in a variety of ways and correctly apply multi-step problem solving strategies to solve mathematical problems. |

| SCIENCE The students will investigate and explain plant processes and interactions between the organisms and the environment. Students will investigate and explain what makes sound, differences in pitch, and the absorption and reflection of sounds. Students will investigate and explain how light travels and reflects from various surfaces and the electromagnetic spectrum. Students will investigate and explain what matter is; the properties of matter; and how matter is made up of elements and compounds. The students will explore physical and chemical changes, solutions and suspensions, and the sources and movement of energy. Students will explain the parts and functions of the circulatory system and the respiratory system. |
SOCIAL STUDIES The students will explore and discuss many different topics in social studies beginning with the Native Americans, Early Explorers, and Colonization. Students will study the formation of our government, the Industrial Revolution, and the Civil War. Students will study Pioneers and the Westward Movement. The students will explore different methods for reading and note taking, studying, and how to research and write reports. |

| READING The students will show an appreciation for reading both for information and for pleasure. Students will use numerous strategies to comprehend and use higher level thinking skills. They will focus on genre and the literary elements by reading the selections in their textbooks, novels, and educational magazines. In addition they will do small group projects, presentations, monthly book reports, and participate in discussions where they will have to effectively communicate information. |
ENGLISH/LANGUAGE The students will focus on writing using a modified version of the Six-Trait Writing program while learning the grammar skills outlined in their textbooks. They will begin by working on sentence structure and build up to a correctly written paragraph. The types of paragraphs they will write are a personal narrative, expository, how-to, and persuasive. They will also be able to identify parts of speech. |
